Who We Are

LifeRing Akron is a local chapter of LifeRing Secular Recovery — a peer-led, non-religious support network for people who want to live free from alcohol and drugs.

We meet right here in Summit County, serving the Akron community with judgment-free meetings centered on shared personal experiences.

You are in charge of your own recovery.

Whether you're newly sober, navigating long-term recovery, still figuring things out, or just curious about what recovery can look like without a religious framework, you are welcome here. LifeRing Akron surrounds you with a community that believes in you.

The 3-S Philosophy of LifeRing

Sobriety

LifeRing defines sobriety as complete abstinence from alcohol and nonmedically indicated drugs. LifeRing views medically-assisted treatment as a decision you make with your medical provider — not something the group judges.

Secularity

Secularity means without religion, not anti-religion. LifeRing welcomes people of all faiths and none. Out of respect for everyone, meetings are conducted in a secular way — no prayer, no religious discussion, no higher power requirement.

Self-Empowerment

The key to recovery is your own motivation and effort. Empowering your sober self means taking action and maintaining a personal recovery program that supports living drug and alcohol free. You decide what works for you.

What to Expect at a Meeting

Stepping into a new recovery group can feel intimidating, but you are among friends. Whether you join us in person or online, here is what you can count on when you attend a LifeRing Akron meeting

A Warm, Judgment-Free Welcome

We begin by introducing ourselves (sharing pronouns if you choose). You are welcome to actively join in or simply sit back, listen, and take in the space. You will never be forced or pressured to share.

Conversational Support ("Cross-Talk")

Unlike traditional recovery meetings with strict silence rules, our space is conversational! We encourage positive back-and-forth dialogue — asking questions, sharing practical ideas, and offering supportive feedback.

Safe Spaces

To keep our environment safe and constructive for everyone, we avoid religion, politics, "war stories," or trashing other recovery paths. If joining online, we simply ask that you stay off video if driving, mute when not speaking, and keep smoking/vaping off camera.

No Labels Required

You don't have to call yourself an "alcoholic" or an "addict." We respect everyone's unique journey and focus on empowering your sober self for the future, not labeling your past.

Flexible Formats

Depending on the meeting, we either check in with "How Was Your Week?" (sharing the highlights, heartaches, and upcoming challenges of daily life) or dive into a focused recovery topic together.

Privacy

What is shared in the room stays in the room. You are always welcome to share the insights and ideas you gain here with others, but we ask that you protect everyone's privacy by keeping who you saw strictly confidential.
